The Southern California Flat Track Association scraped into round five of their twelve round series on a warm Saturday evening. This was the first race of the second weekend double header of the year, with round six on Sunday making up for the postponed round one. This reporter is going to summarize both rounds in this web report, with over one-hundred and sixty entries at round five, and over one-hundred and ten entries on Sunday despite the heat that hovered in the high nineties. We are going to cover both rounds in this report, so let’s slide it out.

Main leader Colin Petton is down and an excited Aidan Omelina goes into the lead. Unfortunately on the last turn of the last lap, Omelina’s slides out hitting the dirt. Schnakenberg, running her little Yamaha PW50 past the two fallen racers, stays consistent for the class and overall Main win. Miss Schnakenberg defined the thought, just finish and things will work it out, and work out it did for the Main win.

Steele Friedrich #26 and Brad Rudy #19R racing hard for the win in the Senior Vet +50 Amateur on day two, round six. Friedrich and Rudy have started to become the big show in the SCFTA Senior Vet +50 Amateur. Rudy made a late race pass on Friedrich at round five for the win with Friedrich second. Racing for the lead once again on Sunday, Friedrich was executing well as he could to keep the testy Rudy back. On the last lap a racer went down at the exit of turn two forcing a yellow with the pack leaders approaching fast. In the heat of the mix, Friedrich passed on the outside of the fallen racer, with Rudy taking the inside and passing Friedrich in the balance for the lead. Controversy over Rudy’s pass under the yellow has rekindled debate and hopefully a clarification of the rules. Friedrich in for second, Tim Watters finished up in third for this round six race.

Ferguson won both rounds in the Classic Vintage (500-750), Pape stayed on Ferguson’s heels in the Sunday Main, for the second on his brakeless 1968 T-100 Triumph.

WD Travis Petton.
Travis Petton won reportedly all four of his class heat races on Sunday, so his Dad decided to have him start on the back line in the 85 cc classes for the Main. Petton IV came from the back and passed Frank Flores for the win in Sunday’s 85cc 2-Stroke Amateur. Flores was having none of it in the 85cc Open. Laying down effective lap and line management with the early lead, Flores stayed a wide presence to the checkers for the class win, Petton a second. Racing in four classes on Sunday, Petton IV won the Open Amateur and was second in the 250 Youth Open. In the previous night’s activities, Petton won both 85cc classes and the Open Amateur, he was second in the 250 Youth Open.

WD In the second of the two Pro heats, Jace Callison #112, John Vanderlaan #12Y, Colt Foster #84e, and Nick Gil #17R.
In the second of the two Pro heats, Jace Callison #112, John Vanderlaan, Colt Foster #84e, and Nick Gil #17R.Colt Foster had the twenty lap Pro Main lead all to his own until Nick Gil shimmied and jived his way to the front and we have a sliding free for all. Gil takes the lead with less than two laps to go. Foster fights back and regains only the lead and loses it as we approach the last turn on the last lap, Foster makes a gassed out pass on the inside at the checkers for the lead and the win, Gil second, and Vanderlaan third.
WD Nick Gil.
Race Tech’s Nick Gil, is a definite threat in each Pro Main he saddles up. Gill spurted to the point for the first two laps of Sunday’s Pro Main. but was soon overcome by the force of John Vanderlaan surrendering the lead on lap three. He maintained the proper type of angular momentum to stay second to the checkers, for his second Pro second in a row.
WD John Vanderlaan.
John Vanderlaan had been a bit flustered in the SCFTA Pro class, racing in his first complete SCFTA season, he was looking for his first 2015 SCFTA Pro won. The sliding gods were on his side for this event. Behind Gil at the start, Vanderlaan made a screeching inside pass around lap four in the front stretch, pass Gil and into the lead. He never looked back despite riding with an injured right foot, and brought home the roses for his first SCFTA 2015 Pro Main win. He would like to thank Race Tech, Southland Racing, and his Dad, Bill Vanderlaan.
