With vibrations from an angry motor and the suspension pounding a rough track, the view through a mud splattered visor can be just a blur. For RacePro Tech’s Justin Peck and Ray Griffith, the month of May moved at such a frantic pace, it might have seemed like a blur as well. The month began in the desert; racing at the Best In The Desert series Laughlin Desert Classic in Laughlin, Nevada. The weekend of the 13th and 14th saw the duo competing in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Regional series at the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah. Griffith finished first and Peck was second.
On Wednesday, May 18th, Justin loaded the Giveaway Garage.com 6100, Pro Lite, and Jr Kart and headed off to the capital building for an event with Senator Peter Knudsen. In conjunction with The United States Motorsports Association (USMA), a Non-Profit Organization that was initiated to conduct the first-ever National Motorsports Impact Report, Justin pointed out to the Senator and those assembled, the positive economic impact motorsports brings to Utah. Justin also took photos with fans and signed autographs for the crowd.
The following day, the Giveaway Garage rigs were loaded and headed back to the Utah Motorsports Campus for rounds 5 and 6 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. GiveawayGarage.com was at the event to further promote the Ultimate Off Road Package Sweepstakes, which includes a Custom Lifted F150 Truck and RZR Polaris Razor. The Giveaway Garage.com team had a contest to give away tickets to the race on Friday and was out signing hero cards for the fans, first thing on Saturday. The power of Justin and Ray’s personalities and positive message draws a crowd everywhere they go.
When the race started on Saturday, the power of Justin and Ray’s GiveawayGarage.com Pro Lite trucks were on display. Justin started 11th, Ray, 14th and by the midpoint of the race they had moved all the way up to 6th and 7th with Ray leading the pair. There is a jump after turn one that they were using to set-up for turn two. They kick the back end of the truck around in midair to get turned in for the corner. Ray got a little too sideways and rolled over. Justin, who was right on his tail, barely missed collecting him. “I was having a real good race,” said Justin, “Ray and I were making good moves, going inside and outside, making passes in the corners and moving up through the field. After the yellow came out it bunched up the field and someone got over anxious. I got doored, pushed out into the fluff and lost a couple places.” Fluff is the loose dirt that gets pushed into a berm on the outside of the corners. Despite his crash, Ray got going again and made it to the finish.
On Sunday, both trucks were running strong again. Justin was mid-pack when he got punted from behind and spun out. He got going again, staying on the lead lap, but had a gap between himself and the rest of the field. A yellow flag came out which set up a green/white/checkered flag finish. He picked up a couple spots but was hit hard in the side. Unbeknownst at the time, his brake rotor got shattered. After flying off the big tabletop jump at speed, he was unable to slow down for the next corner. “I tried pumping the brakes but the pedal was on the floor,” said Justin, “The best I could do was downshift and slide the truck sideways so I wouldn’t slam the wall head on. I blasted into the wall and couldn’t finish.”
Ray had better luck avoiding the contact. “My GiveawayGarage.com truck was working great; we are really getting the trucks sorted out,” said Ray, “After working up to the fifth spot, I went wide in the rhythm section and lost a couple spots. It’s awesome that I started near the back twice and was still able to crack the top ten. (Ray finished 7th). I can’t wait to get to Mexico for the next rounds. I’ve raced the Baja 500 and 1000; the short course race there last year was awesome.”
The Lucas Oil Series next heads to the Baja International Short Course at Estero Beach Ensenada, MX on June 18th and 19th for rounds 7 and 8. The RacePro Tech / GiveawayGarage.com team will be mixing it up on the track and taking in the sights, sounds, and tacos, south of the border during race weekend.
